Announcing Video Commander

Today I am excited to announce the alpha release of Video Commander, a desktop tool designed for inspecting, understanding and working with video files as a video engineer.

Video tooling is a powerful, but often complex and fragmented space. Between container formats, codecs, and a myriad of tools, it can be challenging to find a unified solution that meets all your needs. Video Commander aims to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive suite of features that streamline video file analysis and manipulation.

Why Video Commander?

Any video engineer knows the pain of juggling multiple tools to get a complete picture of a video file. Video Commander consolidates these functionalities into a single, user-friendly application.

What's included at launch

Video Commander launches with a focus on video file inspection and analysis, including:

  • Media inspection for video and audio files, including tracks and metadata
  • MP4 structure visualization, with tree and graph views of box hierarchies
  • Track and sample analysis for deeper insight into timing and layout
  • Conversion workflows powered by FFmpeg, without living in the terminal

Everything runs locally as a desktop app, keeping your media files on your machine.

Alpha Release

Video Commander is launching in alpha.

This release is about validating the core experience and gathering real-world feedback. Some features are incomplete, the UI will continue to evolve, and things may change quickly. If you're a video engineer or enthusiast, I encourage you to try out Video Commander and share your thoughts.

Breaking changes are expected during the alpha phase as we refine the product.

Pricing

Pricing is TBD.

Details around licensing and paid features will be shared once Video Commander moves closer to a stable release.

Looking Ahead

This is just the beginning.

Future versions of Video Commander will expand into deeper analysis, quality and validation tooling, delivery and packaging workflows, and more powerful automation. The long-term vision is a toolchain that makes video workflows more transparent, reliable, and developer-friendly.

If you work with video files, I encourage you to give Video Commander a try.
